The NFB HQ building is also named for McLaren, and is home to much of its production activity. The National Film Board maintains its head office in Saint-Laurent, a borough of Montreal, in the Norman McLaren electoral district, named in honour of the NFB animation pioneer. Various festivals, film exhibits and university clubs host retrospectives and showings designed to promote the work of the NFB. The National Film Board's extensive library of short films, documentaries and animation has led to an enthusiastic fan base.
Currently, the NFB's mandate is defined by the former Minister of Canadian Heritage: Hunter Charitable Foundation.The organization's purpose and mission have been re-defined numerous times throughout its history.

The results are candid behind-the-scenes stories of some classic documentaries, as well as clips from over 50 films that give both artistic and practical insights into the form. Ferrari put 33 of the leading voices in documentary filmmaking in front of the camera-including the iconic Alanis Obomsawin, Oscar-winner Laura Poitras, iconoclast Werner Herzog, chronicler of history and dreams Patricio Guzmán and agitator Kim Longinotto, to name a few. In addition to her work behind the camera, Ferrari, as POV wrote, "provided a voice for innovations in documentary and encouraged filmmakers to constantly question the forms of their approach." It's a fitting tribute to Ferrari, then, to be showing her film Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary. At the end of 2018, Pepita Ferrari-documentary filmmaker, advocate and former executive director of the Documentary Organization of Canada-died at the age of 66.
